Colin Wilson's 'new existentialism' is the antithesis of the defeatism and pessimism of the 'old existentialism' of Sartre, Camus and others, and is all to do with meaning and purpose in human existence, and the realisation of beneficent human potential. See, for example, Wilson's 'Introduction to the New Existentialism' (1966). As he wrote: 'Man has no alternative but eventually to become responsible for the whole universe.'
